YouDance is focused on learning through sharing in a professional process and venue. Watching dance informs our own dance-making, and young people learn both as audience and participants.
YouDance emphasises sharing to promote a positive environment, build community among young dancers, encourage experimentation and celebrate diversity.
YouDance is three nights showcasing youth dance performance and choreography. Each show has a different programme to enable as many groups as possible to participate. Young people preparing to bring work to YouDance are offered support with site visits, feedback and choreographic workshops. We invite members of the professional dance community to YouDance to give the teachers, choreographers and dancers feedback to help them develop further.
Each year Tempo selects dance works from YouDance for inclusion in their show ‘Ignite!’.
YouDance is presented by The Northern Dance Network (NDN) which supports and advocates for dance in Auckland. NDN first met in 1992 and since then has been responsible for introducing and running many dance events and projects. Most notably it was responsible for the establishment of the Auckland Dance Festival that is now Tempo.
NDN is a not for profit incorporated society and is registered as a charity. It is run entirely by a group of volunteers from different sectors of the dance community who are passionate about creating pathways and opportunities for dancers.
The YouDance Auckland youth dance festival initiative was developed in consultation with a group of secondary school dance teachers and community dance leaders after noting the lack of opportunities for secondary students to share their creative work with one another and the wider community without the boundaries imposed by commercial competitions.Any profit from the event is re-invested back into the community.
